Sick Kitteh

Yes, still sick today, but feeling so much better. I will try and post something later today.

You’ve Got Mail

I wish that I could be as cute as Meg Ryan when I’m sick.

Perfectly coiffed. Lovely in boyish pajamas, tucking tissues under pillows like a squirrel hiding acorns for the winter while Tom Hanks wait at the door. Her red nose was cute. Mine is dry and sad.

I’m pretty sure that the mountain of tissues that currently surrounds me isn’t remotely charming.

My mom didn’t come for the week. I am sad, but I understand.

I guess it’s just as well though right? Seeing as how I’m sick in a very non-Meg Ryan kind of way.

My ears are ringing. I’m going back to bed.

I hope that all of you are better than I am.

I’m making Smitten Kitchen’s Chicken and Dumplings… Feels like good sick food.

Catch you on the flip side… Whatever that means.

Brendan got sick yesterday, and I’m pretty certain that I’m coming down with whatever he has… That’s a major downside of sharing a bed. It’s almost impossible not to catch what your partner has!!

More to come later. For now, I’ll leave you with Judy.

Friday! Hurray! Hurray!

Hi there,

sorry about the long absence, I have been busy with real-life stuff, and haven’t had the chance to partake in much blog-life stuff. How are you guys doing? Did you have a good week? Do you have any weekend plans?

Brendan and I are going to take Wanda the Honda (our car) to get an test today. Hopefully it won’t take forever.

Yesterday, I painted our coffee table grey- which turned out to be bluey grey really, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. Pictures to follow soon though.

Tomorrow night we’re having some friends (!!!) over for dinner, which is very exciting. New Jersey is starting to feel a little more like home, and a little less like a place that would be good to leave.

I hope you all have a stellar weekend, full of fun and productivity.

A Necessary Evil

I am busy this week. I have compiled a to do list in my head over the last few days, and finally took the time to actually write it out… It was not good guys. As you might have noticed on previous occasions, I tend to get a little hyper when people come out and visit us. Remember that time I made an awesome duvet cover because I had friends coming out, and just hated the guest bedroom? Yeah, that instance was also accompanied by manic cleaning…

Let me take a minute to assure you (MOM) that my house is almost always pretty clean, but it is sometimes hard to stay on top of it when you are the only one cleaning… And one of your room mates sheds everywhere.

Oh well. Cleaning is just a necessary evil, I suppose.

On a brighter note, Brendan and I are going to go see “Hunger Games” this weekend. That will be something nice to look forward to.

That’s all for now.

The Kindness of Friends and Neighbors: Part Deux

Hi There!

This was such a huge DIY weekend for us.

It all started with a trip to Home Depot. Last Friday I talked about how I’ve been searching for the perfect shade of blue for Penny, and after about a week of looking, I found the right blue! We got Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch in aqua in stain finish.

It is such a great color, and we could not be happier with how Penny turned out… Well, I love it… Brendan says he doesn’t dislike it as much. That’s an improvement, right?

Here she is now (drum roll please).

Isn’t she cute!? I really like her. She’s bizarre, she’s whimsical, and she’s cute. YEAH!!

I figured that Penny would be the only project that I did this month. Imagine my surprise, when our sweet neighbors who are moving in six days (sad face) gave us a Formica table that we had briefly talked about the day before. I had mentioned that it would be a great craft table, and they brought it over on Sunday (!!!).

Now the table was a little damaged, and the legs had some rust, but Ken, (one of our neighbors) brought out his sander and some sand paper, and together we sanded down the table and the legs. That’s just the kind of guy Ken is, the kind that helps his DIY novice neighbors after giving us a table. Did I mention that Ken also spray painted our table for us? Crazy, right? We have such nice neighbors. We will miss them when they’re gone.

To prep the table, we wiped it down with TSP Concentrate, which took care of residual stickiness, and left over paint.

Here’s Ken sanding off the rust on the table legs.

Such a difference! We wiped it down with the TSP, and then we sprayed it silver spray paint.

So much better!

Then we moved on to the table. We painted it white first, because we were worried that we would not be able to cover the brown with the aqua spray paint.

Then aqua.

After the table dries, we will bring it up to the guest bedroom/craft room, put my sewing machine on it, and we’re off! I am so very excited about this table. I cannot wait to get it up in the guest bedroom, and see how great it looks in there! I’m thinking I might put a protective coating on the table before we bring it up. I will be posting pictures of the table in the guest bedroom in the next few days.

What did you do this weekend?

Spring Fever

Hey guys,

It’s March now. Even though there’s a chill in the air, I keep on waking up and peeking out the window, looking for that first suggestion of Spring. Yep, I can’t wait for spring. Brendan swears to me that spring has a smell. Growing up in the desert spring and summer weren’t so different from each other… Spring was more of a warm up for summer, which always seemed to last forever.

There are these tiny little flowers growing in our backyard under the shade of one of our enormous ivy covered trees. It makes me want to buy a hat and a pretty pastel colored dress like I use to have when I was a little girl. Instead I think that I’ll buy some hydrangeas to add a pop of color to my otherwise winter-weary home.

I always think of this song when I think of Spring.. I can’t even remember the first time I watched State Fair.… Anyway….

What will you do in the spring? Plant flowers? Have picnics? Buy shoes? I plan on doing all of those things.. Don’t tell Brendan. ; )

House Tour: The Guest Bedroom

I am so excited to share my house with you, but have decided to do it segments, showing you one room every few days. In this segment I plan to show you the way each room is, along with my plans for the space. As we decorate, I will update our house tour pictures, and refer back to the originals and our original concept. : )

Yeah house tour!

Here’s my concept, and what I’ve done so far:

Here’s what I have left:

1. yellow and white curtains- possibly chevrons

2. yellow and blue accent pillows

3. Painting the wardrobe

So close!! I also need to put some art on the wall, and possibly a mirror.

What do you think? I am really excited about this room. I feel happy every time I go into that room. I amso looking forward to feeling that way about our whooooooole house.

She’s Crafty: The Post in Which She Paints a Picture.

Almost all our walls are blank. I have pictures, and Brendan has beautiful Chinese scrolls that he got when he studied abroad in China, but still our walls are mostly blank. I have been wanting to print some of our wedding pictures out to hang on the walls, but we never seem to get around to it. I don’t know about Brendan, but I didn’t really want to buy impersonal prints that could be found on hotel walls and call it art.

That’s why when I saw this picture, I knew that I had to recreate it.

This is such a simple and honest picture. Not only is it so true, but it’s also a lyric from our song, “Home,” by Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros.

We both loved the song when we heard it, and felt that it was true for us. Especially now that we are so far away from home, this song means more. The funny thing is that my best friend Stephanie, who was our amazing DJ at our wedding played this song for us as we were getting ready to leave our wedding, without of ever having a discussion about how we loved “Home.”

I cried the whole way to the place we stayed on our wedding night. Happy tears, but leaving home tears too. We flew out to New Jersey the next morning.

So far away from home and everything that was familiar and comfortable. But Brendan is here, and we fill our home with laughter and love, and are making new memories. I can honestly say that I do feel at home here, because Brendan is here. Brendan is my home.

Cheeeeeeeesy but so true.

So anyway, I’m going to find a nice piece of wood, sand it, spray paint it black, and stencil in the words and hang it in spot where I can look at it every day.

I hope to do this craft after I’m finished with my duvet- which will be in a couple of days probably.
